Soldiers fire tear gas on protesters ahead of Benin poll

Security forces in Benin have fired tear gas to disperse opposition protesters ahead of Sunday’s presidential election.

Eyewitnesses said a convoy of military vehicles broke up makeshift barricades that the protesters had set up in the central city of Save.

President Patrice Talon is widely expected to win a second term but critics say he has sidelined his political rivals – the strongest of whom are either in exile or have been disqualified from standing.

Several protests have been held this week in a country which has grown more authoritarian under Mr Talon’s leadership.
