Gumi talked nonsense: “fulani herdsmen are not terrorists”

The well-known Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi was reacting to the recent kidnap of schoolchildren of Tegina Islamic School in Niger State when he talked this nonsense.

He has pointedly asked Buhari-led administration to negotiate with over 100,000 bandits in the north, almost absolving them of any serious blame. According to him hunger is the only reason for all the atrocious acts.

Kidnapping of Islamic pupils “actually proves to the nation that the bandits are not really indoctrinated, they are just looking for money and I think that this is a good prognosis. They are not targeting a religion; they are not ideologues, which are difficult to deal with. We should not forget that they are not educated, formally or informally. They are just going about with cattle, and suddenly they found a lucrative way of finding money”.

But this is nonsense, isn’t it? Gumi made no attempt to hide his defense of the Fulani herdsmen. He doesn’t want us to think that of them as people with original inclination to kill. He doesn’t want us to think that to think that the criminal actions of these people points to race.

And he is making a case that Federal Government need not bomb their hide out and deal with them with “the language they will understand”.

I think its time the nation looked for a second time with aim to seeing whether there is a real meaning behind the Tegina kidnapping. It could be a drama, a premeditated scheme to change the narrative that Fulani herdsmen could be harmless, after all.
